This selection encompasses works ranging from the 1900 photogravure of Curtis to Colavito’s most recent works – made this year. The lots cover a broad range of subjects: from celebrity photographs to landscape, abstraction and minimalism.
Here are some highlights of the auction:
Collection of Curtis
TRIBUTE TO NATIVE AMERICA
In this auction we feature 14 works by Edward Curtis – the legendary early U.S.
photographer. This selection includes portraits, landscapes and everyday imagery of Native Americans. The works are grouped into four lots. Some of the images are
AP’s. This collection is also possibly the only one that has remained in Native
American hands since its creation, as it was originally given to a local chief by Curtis
himself.
Berenice Abbott
ENTIRE PATH IN SIX SHOTS
Six images, made by Abbott during her long career as a photographer gives an interesting perspective on her creative path. This auction also includes a portrait of Abbott, made by Hank O’Neal.
Philippe Halsman
THE MOVIE NIGHT
The iconic Philippe Halsman is represented in this collection by four images from three different collectors – all featuring movie celebrities:
Marylin Monroe, Cantiflas and french star Fernandel.
Alvarez Bravo
LIFE ITSELF PICTURED
The unmatched skill and vision of Manuel Álvarez Bravo is represented by three almost anthropological shots which are interesting both photographically and historically.
Ansel Adams
TIMELESS
Two images from the ever-celebrated Adams, from different collections, depict what Adams was best at – the grandeur of nature.
Experimental Photography
WHAT FUTURE BRINGS?
In this auction for the first time in Phi’s history, and possibly for the first time ever, we are presenting a large collection of experimental photography. The artists presented in this section are exploring the boundaries of what can be done in the media – in many ways shaping its future.
The collection starts with the experimental approach of Horowitz, using every tool in the dark room, to create surreal images alluding to new realities.
The images in this part of the auction acknowledge the digital era with works by Alex AG – philosophical fantasies with complex narratives.
Experimental approaches are evidenced in multiple ways, from Colavito’s multiple exposure analog images to Toulinov’s “visual literature” works.
